WAYNE RICH WINS SHAPING COMPETITION HONORING CARL EKSTROM
Over 6000 attend two day Sacred Craft Expo in Del Mar celebrating the surfboard; Daniel Thomson receives “Best of Show” recognition

Encinitas, Ca., (October 10, 2011) – Putting him in rarefied air with Florida’s Ricky Carroll, Santa Barbara’s Wayne Rich won his second Tribute to the Masters Shape-off Competition presented by US Blanks. This year’s competition was unique in that the six shapers were tasked with creating an asymmetrical design inspired by legend and honoree Carl Ekstrom.

“Wow! I’m over the moon. This is humbling, exciting, truly an honor, because the five other shapers really brought their A-games,” said Rich. “This year’s format created a design environment for all of us to get creative, and it that helped make this event the best one yet. These five craftsman, and all of the surfboard builders here today, proved to me one very important lesson; hand-shaped surfboards are in a really good place. We’re not going anywhere.”

Carl Ekstrom, Rusty Preisendorfer and Stanley Pleskunas judged the final shapes which included a five minute proof-of-concept Q and A with each shaper. The other five competing shapers included defending champion Matt Biolos of LOST surfboards in San Clemente, and San Diegan’s George Gall, Tim Bessell, Ryan Burch and Daniel Thomson . All six shapers were selected by Carl Ekstrom.

Daniel Thomson of Tomo Surfboards in Encinitas won “Best of Show” with a surfboard that combined unique carbon fiber construction with a quasi-rectangular outline and extremely sophisticated applied theories. “Best of Show” finalists included a Barry Kanaiaupuni chambered balsa quad-fin gun, a Donald Brink asymmetrical fish, a futuristic asymmetrical channel bottom from Ryan Burch, an exquisite Holmsey ‘Sidewinder’ inspired longboard by Nick Palandrani, the 16′ ultra glider from Chris Christenson and one of Gene Cooper’s ultra-gorgeous and highly refined ‘pig’ longboards.

“There were some incredible boards on exhibit and it made picking just one very difficult,” explained expo director Scott Bass. “Each and every craftsman created something special. We’re fortunate to have a committee of respected industry insiders who select “Best of Show” and they are above reproach.”

On Saturday evening, Billabong’s Art of Shaping LA County Edition Auction raised tens of thousand of dollars for SIMA’s Humanitarian Fund. Jeff Ho’s “POP” Zephyr gun was the top auction item garnering $7,100.

“Billabong is deeply grateful for the efforts and contributions of all 24 Los Angeles County shapers that participated is this year’s event,” said Billabong’s Royce Cansler. “The collection of handcrafted surfboards they produced was truly an amazing sight to behold. We also want to thank those who purchased these boards and in doing so helped us raise over $38,000.”

With over 160 booths at this year’s celebration of the surfboard, the Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo was the largest consumer surfboard expo ever produced with over 6000 in attendance. The congregation of surfers from as far away as Australia, Japan, New York, and Michigan flocked to the packed house of surfboard industry shapers, designers, manufacturers, brands and businesses. Legends such as Greg Long, Rob Machado, David Nuuhiwa, Mike Hynson and a host of others cruised the aisles. There was even a rumored Phil Donahue sighting (who apparently came over from the Gourmet Expo a few buildings down). Scott Bishop, of SurfCamera.com, was approached and discussed business with a key buyer from Amazon.com. Retailers from Santa Cruz to Tijuana roamed the floor to gain insight from the core surf audience.

Sacred Craft Expo thanks our sponsors, exhibitors and attendees for joining us in our celebration of the surfboard and all the authentic culture the flows from it.

The Sacred Craft version of "Roadshow" invites the general public to bring collectible surfboards and memorabilia to a panel of experts for appraisal. The panel assigns a value to the items, but more importantly they often uncover the provenance, or story, behind the value of the item.

 [...]

Public invited to bring collectible surfboards or surf memorabilia for evaluation

The upcoming Sacred Craft Consumer Surf Expo has something for everybody – even antique collectors. The Collectible Surfboard & Surf Memorabilia “Antique Roadshow” is modeled after PBS TV’s highly successful “Antique Roadshow” series.

“The power of the “Roadshow” lies in the ‘buried treasure concept,’” said Scott Bass, Expo Director. “Many of us possess, in our garage or attic, or perhaps under the house, a collectible surfboard; a board that for whatever reason holds intrinsic value above and beyond the value of a regular or ‘normal’ used surfboard. If the board has a strong provenance, well, this generally increases its value. Perhaps it was on the cover of a surf magazine, or George Greenough pulled into the barrel on it during filming of “Innermost Limits of Pure Fun.” Whatever the case, our appraisers want to see it.”

But ‘roadshow’ isn’t just about surfboards. Surf ‘paper’, as the experts refer to it, is also of import to the collectors and appraisers. Maybe you possess an old Rick Griffin surf movie poster from the Santa Monica Civic, or a Malibu Pro surf contest program, or perhaps a business card from Tom Blake or signed photo of Duke Kahanamoku Any item that you think may be worth something, the appraisers would love to see it, and to help you better understand its provenance and possible market value. The more information you can bring to the discussion, the more accurate the appraisal.

We all probably have a bit of buried treasure; we just may not know it! The Collectible Surfboard “Antique Roadshow” appraisals will visit the Del Mar Fairgrounds one day only, on Saturday October 8 from 10am-4pm as a part of the 2-day Sacred Consumer Surfboard Expo. Expert appraisers, including Bird Huffman from Bird’s Surf Shed and experts from the Surfing Heritage Foundation and the California Surf Museum, will be on hand for surfboards, surf ‘paper’, surf posters, surf magazines, surf art, surf books and surf memorabilia. Please bring out your surf collectibles for appraisal – and a great time.

The Board Art Benefit is an event designed to bring leading artists together at great venues where they will have the opportunity to create live art on surfboards for the purpose of raising support for SurfAid International. The first event will be held at the upcoming Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo in Del Mar on October 8-9, 2011.

The concept was inspired by a recent event that SurfAid International held at the last Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo in Santa Cruz, called Shapers 4 Humanity. At this event, several of the worlds top shapers were invited to take part in a live shaping event and donate the finished boards to SurfAid. The Board Art Benefit simply extends this concept to the artists and invites some of the leading artists from the surf community to lend their unique aesthetic vision to the surfboards as well.

The organizers of the Sacred Craft events have always gone out of their way to invite artists from the surfing community to be a part of the event in a space dubbed “The Art Grotto”. Many of the artists have done some great live art on site during the event. The Board Art Benefit will bring a better focus to the artists at the event by integrating the core theme of the event, the sacred craft known as the surfboard.

The aim of the Board Art Benefit is to provide a great venue for the participating artists to showcase their work, to provide the public with a great chance to witness some of their favorite artists at work, and to support SurfAid International. The finished boards from this event will later be auctioned, with the proceeds benefitting SurfAid International.

Phil Roberts is teaming up with the legendary Gerry Lopez to create his work of art for this event. For the past 3 years the two of them have been collaborating to produce the trophy board given to the winner of the Billabong Pipeline Masters event. In the shaping bay, Gerry draws upon his years of unparalleled mastery of the wave at Pipeline to create an authentic hand-shaped board from the era in which he stamped his soulful approach on the mind’s of an entire generation.

Phil Roberts then draws upon his years of creating artwork and illustration at the highest level (he began doing art on boards in 1976 at the age of 15) to produce a masterpiece of homage to Gerry’s contribution to the sport and lifestyle of surfing.

DAMIAN FULTON

Influenced by Norman Rockwell and Rick Griffin among others, Damian Fulton’s imaginative blend of storytelling, scrambled pop imagery, and painterly technique belie a respect for traditions of the past. Sprinkle in his love of the ocean and urban experience and you have a distinctly original vision.

Fulton launched his art career as a cartoonist and illustrator creating counterculture comic strips like “The Shred Brothers” for Surfer Publications and the action sports classic “Radical Rick” in BMX Plus Magazine, and painting surf posters for Ocean Pacific. After doing time at Ogilvy and Mather Advertising in Los Angeles as Senior Partner Creative Director, and Marvel Productions as VP Head of Creative Development, he’s returned to his first love with a vengeance.

RICK RIETVELD

You’ve seen Rick Rietveld’s bizarre artwork in magazines and posters for years, American Indians riding sharks, beautiful mermaid creatures, even Albert Einstein on vacation in Hawaii. Since his days as the creative force behind the scenes for the Maui and Sons apparel line in the 1980’s. Rick has become an icon in the art world’s surfing subculture. His work has always been imitated but never replicated. His body of work is impressive, the style unmatched and the ideas often not of this world. After studying at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Rick began a commercial surf art career creating for various surf companies. That experience was the foundation for the Creative Director position at Maui and Sons in 1980 which he held until 1995. For the next 10 years he ran his own brand of art inspired clothing Rietveld USA until he sold it to an Italian group so that he could focus on his fine art career. He is currently selling his originals to private collectors worldwide. Rick’s original art, limited edition prints, posters and surfboards are now available at the McKibben Studios.com Gallery.

For more info e-mail Rick at; RietveldR@aol.com

Rick is partnering with Jed Noll, the son of surfing’s living legend Greg Noll, to create a timeless piece of work for the Board Art Benefit.

ERIK ABEL

Born in Ventura County, Erik Abel grew up within a few minutes of the sunny beaches of Southern California. From the time he was able to hold onto a crayon, he was drawing… and he’s never stopped.

With an unquenched thirst for knowledge and understanding of the world around him Abel assembles his experiences into a unique visual language. One which alludes to some primitive yet thoughtful origin. His relaxed technique and nature-based subject communicates a sense of wonder, experimentation, discovery and balance.

Being heavily influenced by and involved in the surf/skate/snow sports industry and working as a freelance graphic designer and art director for over 15 years, Abel’s method of bold, graphical imagery fused with his loose brush, pen and pencil work seems to find a growing niche of it’s own in the fast rising “Urban Contemporary” art movement. Among the clients his style has attracted are Billabong, Oxbow, Reef, Maui and Sons and Surfing Magazine.

Elements from inspirations such as the ocean, ancient civilizations, cycles of nature, plants, symbols, systems, and mid-century design are combined to create visually pleasing works of art. Abel notes, “I strive for a visual balance in my work, making art is a form of therapy for me. I’m a pretty simple guy, I like to create things that make me feel good and are pleasing to my eyes and my insides. I don’t paint to express my disgust in politics, or pollution or world affairs… it’s actually the opposite, I paint to help me cope with my disgust in politics, pollution and world affairs. Making art just takes me to that happy place where everything is good.”

Recently returned from over 2 1/2 years of traveling and exploring New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, the Tongan and Fijian Islands, Abel is back in Ventura and has been in a creative frenzy. Erik currently shows in galleries throughout the U.S. and plans to continue traveling the world, making art and searching for that perfect wave.”

HEATHER RITTS

As a graduate from Laguna College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach, California, I studied watercolor and received a Bachelor’s in Fine Art with an emphasis in Illustration. My passion for art started long before and in my teens I decided to take my art to surfboards. Along the way I have hand-painted many surfboards and fins, watercolors, and card designs. Recently I started Miss H apparel and took the first steps to sharing it with the world. I hope to capture the simple beauty of the sea and you enjoy my wonderland of exotic flowers, sunshine, and shades of blue.

Partnering with FIREWIRE Surfboards

SPENCER REYNOLDS

“I grew up where the ocean is cold, rough, and the skies are often cloudy. This coast is mysterious and majestic; in my opinion one of the most beautiful places on the planet. My hometown was a modest blue-collar area full of loggers and fishermen located at the tail end of Southern Oregon where the land pushes against the mighty Pacific.

“Ever since I could walk my parents took me to the beach; from an early age I spent as much time as possible at or in the ocean. On my tenth birthday, after much begging on my part, they reluctantly decided to let me have my first body-board. Under my older brothers supervision and sporting a life jacket, I was allowed to go surfing. The ocean’s waves were instantly captivating and have been ever since. It’s become a life obsession.

“My father, who was a naturally gifted creative type, encouraged me to draw and paint from an early age. I don’t think this was done with the hopes that I’d someday dedicate my life to art-related pursuits, I think he just wanted to share the joy of creating. My mother was by her nature very encouraging. As I grew older I never thought twice about what I would do with my life; I would be an artist. Given the blue-collar locale of my youth, it amazes me now that I never questioned my choice. I just pursued that goal bringing me to living a life creating art full time.

“I cannot escape the ocean’s deep influence on my art. It weaves itself into everything I create. Be it my representational wave paintings, of which I can attach, some of the deep wonder, delight and tragedy of life. Or finding creative inspiration in objects found on my local beaches, possessing nothing representational yet having the rugged quality of something that’s spent time rolling around in the Pacific. Saltwater courses through my veins and brings the two passions of my life together, the ocean and my art.”

Spencer Reynolds will be partnering with Jeff “Doc” Lausch from Surf Prescriptions for the Board Art Benefit.

WADE KONIAKOWSKY

After a twenty-five year career creating award-winning advertising, Wade Koniakowsky has returned to his true love, painting. Through his golden wavescapes one can lose the tensions of every life and escape to a distant shore. A surfer since 1966, Wade has soaked up beach culture to develop a deep reservoir of imagery to draw from. Wade’s work has been featured in Graphis, Art Direction, Communication Arts, and Print magazines. His work has been recognized by the New York Art Director’s Club, The Los Angeles Advertising Club and The Clios. His work is exhibited in dozens of galleries around the world and has been selected for the sets of movies and television shows.

MATT BEARD

Matt Beard considers both artwork and surfing wonderful problems to have and stopped trying to quit either of them years ago. He graduated from Humboldt State University in 1998, where he majored in art and minored in philosophy. Good grief. He has never really had a proper full time job. His art has been published here and there in The Surfer’s Journal (vol.17, #3), in Surfer Magazine, Surfing Magazine, Longboard Magazine, Surf Story, Blue Magazine (Germany), Belio (Spain), and has adorned walls all over Humboldt County and beyond.

He hasn’t painted too many boards before this, but he’s into it.

Partnering with Yohei Shiraishi of Taiyo Surfboards, one of Humboldt County’s prominent board builders who melds a craftsman’s approach with a forward thinking emphasis on using local materials. For Yohei, this has led to the pursuit of mastering the art of hollow wood board building, an entirely sensible path for a Humboldt County surfer driven by such an admirable ethos. There are no old growth, new growth, or mid growth stands of poly-anything styrofoam trees in this neck of the woods… just real wood, and that’s all you’ll find in his boards.

Matt Beard’s partnership with Yohei for this event is sure to produce something uniquely Humboldt. Well known for his timeless renditions of the northern coast of California, Matt hopes to render a piece for this event that would have even the most cold-loathing Hawaiians scrambling for their 5-mils.

And…yes, Matt Beard does have a big ol’ gritty beard… in case you were wondering.

TYLER WARREN

Tyler Warren is an inspired and well traveled 24 year illustrator, designer, painter, shaper, and surfer. Although art is nothing new in Tyler’s family, his mother went to art school, his uncle is a successful oil painter and his great uncle Roberto Montenegro was a famous Mexican Muralist in the 1920’s.

Tyler’s timeless, detailed works are inspired by his personal experiences, and dreams. Best known for his intricate penmanship on various products such as clothing, wetsuits, knifes, shoes, surfboards, etc. Over the past few years Tyler has also been working on developing his oil paintings for gallery showings across the world.
DREW BROPHY

Drew Brophy was warned by his high school guidance counselor “Drew, you can’t just surf and paint your whole life.” But he proved her wrong. Drew has been a professional surf lifestyle artist for 25 years.

As a young surfer, Drew’s art career took off when he started applying his energetic, edgy artwork onto surfboards. He became known worldwide for painting surfboards using the new techniques that he developed with water-based paint pens. Eventually, Drew applied his original artworks to add design to many different things, like skateboards, wakeboards, and clothing. Having the opportunity to experiment with many different surfaces and products has allowed Drew to grow tremendously as an artist.

Drew’s inspiration comes from the adventures of exploring surf spots around the world with his wife and son. They live the life that he paints, one filled with big waves, far away beaches and the freedom to live on their own terms. His vision is “to inspire generations of people to live the life of their dreams.” He works towards that vision through being the example and showing the world the good life through his artwork.

Drew has created thousands of paintings over the years. His art has developed a powerful, distinct style that is recognized all over the world.

At Ekstrom’s suggestion this year’s shape-off will not be exact replications but rather new variations of the asymmetrical design. Anything goes! The only parameters are that 1) the finished blanks be asymmetrical and that 2) the fin placement be drawn onto the finished blank.

The finished blanks will be judged by a trio of design legends: Stanley Pleskunas, Rusty Preisendorfer and honoree Carl Ekstrom. The trio anticipates having each shaper discuss with them the ‘proof of design concept’ during the judging process.

“With the asymmetric design it is very important for the judges to fully understand the shapers design concept, and just looking at them won’t do the shaper and his design justice,” said Ekstrom. “These boards are so unique that it’s important to discuss the boards design with the shaper.”

The winner will receive $1K and have their name etched onto the Mike Marshall Perpetual Trophy alongside past Tribute to the Masters winners Ricky Carroll (x2 Mike Diffenderfer, Bill Caster), Marc Andrieni (John Bradbury), Pat Rawson (Dick Brewer), Wayne Rich (Renny Yater), Matt Biolos (Simon Anderson), and Ward Coffey (Doug Haut).

About CARL EKSTROM

Carl Ekstrom was born in 1941, raised in La Jolla, began surfing at age 11 and built his first board at 15. In the early ’60s Ekstrom shaped for Wardy, Ole, Jacobs, Bing, and Con among other surfboard companies. In ’63 he opened his own shop with Al Nelson. Ekstrom developed the first asymmetrical tail design in 1965, based on the idea that the board should better match the surfers own nonlinear stance. In 1988 Ekstrom and Windansea surfer Tom Lochtefeld began working on a stationary wave later dubbed the FlowRider, which made its public debut in a Texas waterpark in the summer of 1991. Ekstrom’s design influence can be found restaurants, military training helmets, Reebok shoes, and beyond. Ekstrom’s asymmetrical surfboard is enjoying a major resurgence with La Jolla surfer Richard Kenvin and the Hydrodynamica crew helping Ekstrom with R&D in and around San Diego environs.

In October of 2011 the Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo will honor Carl Ekstrom during the ‘Tribute to the Masters Shape-off’ presented by US Blanks. The forward thinking Ekstrom’s rejuvenated asymmetrical surfboard concept (germinated in the ‘60s) is the focus with a verve entrenched in the design’s proven performance.

Ekstrom’s suggestion is that this year’s shape-off not be replications, but rather new creations. In honoring the iconic Windansea Surf Club member, a selection of shapers will be asked to create whatever board they desire, the only parameter: it must be asymmetrical. The winner will receive $1K.

“This is great, I’m very stoked,” said Carl Ekstrom. “The asymmetrical design is obviously unique. There is a renewed interest, and it’s all very fresh and interesting. I’m shaping a lot of boards these days: experimenting, tweaking, changing. It’s what I love, so it’ll be fun to see what these extraordinary craftsman come up with.”

“Wow, Carl Ekstrom has been shaping boards since the ‘50s, and the stuff he’s shaping now is extremely relevant,” said Jeff Holtby of US Blanks. “US Blanks is elated to be a part of Carl’s continuing legacy.”
1943 – 1987

Bill Caster was an innovative San Diego shaper known for his progressive channel bottom rounded pins and humble demeanor. Caster started shaping in 1958 under the Select Surfboards label for his Uncle LLoyd Baker. Caster also shaped under distinguished labels such as Olympic, Challenger and Hobie.

He started his own CASTER surfboards label in 1965. Bill Caster was drafted into service in the Vietnam War in 1965 just as his CASTER label was taking flight. He was released from service in 1967 and came home to find the shortboard revolution brewing up new ideas about surfboard design. It was an exciting time to be a surfboard builder. Caster was highly demanding of himself and adapted quickly to the shorter boards, both in the water and in the shaping bay. A quiet, confident and extremely skilled craftsman, Caster let his boards do the talking.

At the peak of his commercial success in 1981 CASTER surfboards could be found up and down the coast of California and all along the Eastern seaboard. Surfers that rode Bill’s boards were extremely loyal, most notable among them was La Jolla professional Chris O’Rourke. But Caster was a humble man who deferred compliments to others.

Sadly Bill Caster died at the age of 44 from colon cancer. He left behind a legacy of quality hand crafted performance surfboards and a legion of friends. However, Bill’s greatest legacy is the family he left behind: daughters Heidi and Heather, and sons David and Daniel. Shapers honoring Bill Caster in 2008 included Matt Calvani, Chris Christensen, Ned McMahon, Timmy Patterson, Ricky Carroll, and Ward Coffey. Florida shaper Ricky Carroll was a repeat winner of the Tribute to the Masters Shape-off honoring Bill Caster.*
